Coping with Disability
A disability can be the consequence of a trauma, illness or genetic. There are
a range of disabilities that people face; and successful coping requires skills
in stress management, thought control and ability to find meaning. The individual
must accept limitations and at the same time continue with activities that are
productive and pleasurable. It is helpful to focus attention on the strengths
and resources that represent the individuals' abilities. Using the intact abilities
can help the individual return to previously enjoyed activities, sometimes in
a creative manner, and begin involvement in new pursuits. It is also important
to find meaning from the disability as well as recognize the potential for creating
new opportunities.
